That’s correct. 110 languages are critically endangered and are at risk of being lost forever. More than 250 Indigenous languages existed before colonisation. Language is a key part of identity and must be protected and preserved. If a language dies, so too could the connected history.

While Indigenous students make similar progress at school to their non-Indigenous peers, they already start behind. Barriers in education can have long-term consequences later in life and we need to work towards closing the gap in order to break this cycle.
